J. Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York City on April 22, 1904. His father Julius and mother Ella were German Jews who emigrated to New York from Germany in 1888, when Robert was three years old. Robert’s parents were first-generation American-born citizens who had both been born within a few years of their arrival in the United States

In addition to being Jewish (his paternal grandfather immigrated from Germany), Robert also had Native American heritage: one of his great-grandfathers was of Cherokee descent; another ancestor served as an interpreter for Cherokee leaders during treaties signed between tribesmen and United States government during negotiations related to removal from land holdings during colonization efforts following American Revolution (1776-1783).

  • Robert Oppenheimer was a physicist who, like many of his contemporaries, began studying physics at an early age. He received his PhD in the field of experimental physics at the University of California in 1923 at age 23—a remarkably young age when you consider that most people don’t even start their careers until they’re well into their twenties.
